Artist Statement
Gillian Lawler’s work is about landscape and memory, exploring the tension between the real and
imagined. She uses her own unreliable recollections of human habitats, wilderness, edgelands and
abandoned settlements to accumulate references that shape a perceived reality rather than a
literal one.
Abandoned places become backdrops, creating a vista that allows her to imagine alternative
timelines or dimensions. These places exist in flux, uncertain and simplified, reducing nature to a
series of indefinite structures and conceptual visions of space, time, and existence.
A more personal dimension emerged following the loss of her mother in late 2017. Themes of
transformation and transition became deeply resonant, reflecting both the physical and
metaphysical process of change. Lawler tries to understand corporeal transformation as an
intangible connection to presence. Forms in the work metamorphose, taking on subtle qualities of
release and rebirth.
These forms are at times grounded, moving, suspended, tethered, hovering, unfolding, or standing
apart from the surrounding landscape. They invoke ghostly inhabitants, acting as sentinels
observing from a distance, traveling elsewhere, sometimes conspicuous, sometimes camouflaged
by elaborate patterning—creating a surreal, dreamlike discomfort where perspectival logic is
withheld and subverted.
These accumulated experiences have led to an exploration of space where the veil between this
world and the next becomes thin and exposed, suggesting an inner world positioned between the
conscious and unconscious.
Painting itself, for the artist, is inherently connected to the unconscious, the place in one’s psyche
where primal life experiences form an elaborate pattern and from which we navigate the world as
human beings. The act of painting provides a space to experience sensation, memory and
intuition, where images appear before meaning fully takes shape. This process allows forms to
slowly emerge through multiple thin layers, gradually becoming tangible through a delicate
interplay of presence and absence, structure and dissolution yet always retaining an element of
uncertainty where meaning remains elusive and just beyond reach.
